Elitism coming into light *

2003-03-01 9:43 p.m.

I promised myself never to touch on this area in my diary, but after browsing through Wee Jian's diary, it seems that debate is finally coming into existence and recognition in my JC...

Debaters seem (or rather are seen) to be people with extremely high intellectual ability, minds choked full with facts, facts and nothing but facts, to echo Mr Gradgrind in Hard Times. Contrary to this belief, debaters are approachable people off the debate floor, but on the floor, they tend to show their second personality, that of either trying to curry favour with the adjudicators or to successfully murder their opponents many times over. (Once during their rebuttal, and other times during their POIs)

Debaters have two distinct categories, contrary to Wee Jian's claim. The first is the classic debater, who loves to publicise himself as the Hannibal Lecter of debates. He will attack anyone, including the beloved adjudicators, to make sure they understand how clever he can be. (Although he might not be in reality). His style spaces more than his content sometimes, and paralyses his opponents such that they forget that they can hit him back in POIs. His POIs can be the sole key to winning the debate, and his teamates always defer to him.

The second type are those who have the passion but fail to grasp the concept. They don't necessarily lack in Style and content, but fail to touch on the third category, that of strategy. Their POIs are given once every four minutes, but in this they hope in can destroy the whole of their opponent's case. Try to respect them on the floor, but they will kow-tow to any one after that. The advantage is that they hardly miss the point and often get best speaker.
