Your candle burnt out long before, your legend ever will 2003-06-05 1:30 a.m. This week was chocked full with emotion. Monday saw the end of the 35th Student Council reign and the dawn of a new set of leaders. These Councillors have served us the school faithfully for the past one year, reaching greater heights, exceeding expectations and overcoming numerous obstacles to transform a drab JC life into one filled with vibrance and joy. What makes a Student Councillor? Is he or she one who responds readily to teacher’s demands, accepting opinions readily, and planning school events as normal everyday functions? Looking at the past year and the first half of 2003, we find the Student Councillors trying to live up to their motto, “We listen" and implementing the students ideas, even if the school administration disagrees with them. They may not have fulfilled all our dreams or wants, but they have broken down barriers, creating a new dimension. The lethargic hours they spent staying back until midnight, the pain of scoldings and physical exhaustion, and the disappointment faced after each failure have transpired into new hopes and dreams. We laughed and called them a "slave community"; we never see that their function is not that of robots. They delivered most of what they promised and more. Ranging from the Dance Mania night to National Day celebrations, they removed the stereotypical way life is. Why break their voices in Cheering? Why sacrifice their holidays to plan for Orientation? We hardly think about this as we pass them each day. The balance of a strong commitment to the school, maintaining active participation with their CCAs and keeping up with school work is their greatest success. We ought to salute them. On this note, a very big thanks you to all the Councillors, especially those I met across the span of one year--Jiing Shyuan, Mike, Wen Yi, Gim Hui, Nicholas, Deborah, Kelvin, Jonathan, Philibert, Rui Fen, Amandae, Yingci, Tammy, Dilane, Nico, Rong Feng, Guang Yi, and Archie. The next moving moment was today, when the 5th House Representatives passed on their duties to the incoming youngsters. The 36 individuals purpose I suppose was to complement the Councillors and to foster even more unity amongst the student body. We laughed at the House cheers, calling them childish or nonsensical, or we planned to skip the events painstakingly put up by these student leaders. It is not to say that we should have cheered louder, or participated in more House events. Their efforts, however silly should be recognised. The showed a passion greater than any of us, an unexplained desire not just to see more fun filled days in the school, but to let us remember days forever. Even the mere Liaison Officer (no offense intended) saw that her position was not to receive CCA points, but to create moments to recollect years down the road. They all deserve more than just applause,House Reps like Sherry, Ruo Hui, Liqing, and the others. I suppose all good things must come to an end. As this chapter of their lives closes, I am sure all (Councillors and House Reps) reflect on what they have brought us in one year and continue to contribute in other areas in the future. Rest peacefully, for you have performed to the best of your ability. As the flame re ignites with the stepping up of eager youngsters ready to prove their worth and achieve even greater heights, we question, will they be like the 35th and 5th? Will they soar? Time will only tell...
