Golden Eggs 2003-07-10 7:34 p.m. During the short three week break, Chih Hung smsed me at around 11:55pm and said something like" hey I got in for the Columbia book prize interview. Did you?" Now for those who don't know what the book prize is about, visit http://www.columbia.org.sg/ to find out. As you may have suspected, I did not get into the second round and replied "well another golden egg for you, see whether it will hatch". Mr. Chan's reply came a few seconds later, which said "Of course it will hatch". Later, in the last week of June, the egg did indeed hatch, not only for the above mentioned person but for Lucas, who came in behind Chih Hung. The "Golden Egg" mentioned is a metaphor for the sudden success one encounters in his life, be it academic results, SYF gold’s, national schools colours or other things. They really do come as a surprise to many, but for the selected few, the eggs pop out at almost every corner. Sometimes the eggs may hatch and produce equally golden chicks, at other times; they actually turn out to be rotten. Do we work for these eggs? Not really, but we yearn for them constantly. We turn green with envy when others get them, and our jealousy grows as people start accumulating them. My own egg could be the time when I was selected for the Study cum Immersion programme in Germany in Secondary three. Then again, it could be when I was presented with a Silver award for my four years of service in scouts. I really never expected that award as I wasn't really the best in scouts. Yet again, another egg could be my O level results. However, as mentioned earlier, the eggs only come at certain periods in our lives. Certain blessed people are showered with then after their fall from grace; others just cannot stop receiving them. There may come a time in our life where the eggs disappear or have horrible impacts, but we will get at least one in our time here on earth. How many eggs have you received?
