Three ladies and a gentleman

2003-09-28 12:45 a.m.

Let's see my attempt at something(s) that is/are slightly controversial:

Conversations with Chih Hung these few weeks have been centred on individuals rather than topics, specific individuals for that matter. First up was Marianne, with CH explaining how his class would dearly want her as a member of 02A04 and how she's already treated as an unofficial member. I guess it must be partly due to Lucas, since he and Marianne are such good friends. There of course is nothing wrong with this close relationship between an individual and other classes as I mentioned in one of my previous posts, but to Chih Hung, he seems to classify Marianne as the closest treasure for his class so much that he has become the protective guardian. Take a look at this snippet of conversation:

Me: George Eliot. Of course you know her real name is Mary Ann Evans.

CH (suddenly woken from a daze): Marianne?

Me: Mary Ann Evans.

CH: Oh. Not Marianne Choo Se Se. I’ve her phone number you know. But of course you aren’t going to have it. Never ever.

Now what’s this talk about me wanting other people’s phone numbers? To set the record straight, I’ve no intention to snatch other people’s numbers from that boy’s phone. Quite the opposite, Mr. Chan has been trying (fortunately to no avail) to steal my phone so that he can view the numbers of the “girls” that he believes I’m in love with. Again, such numbers do not exist in my phone, nor shall I ever expose it to anyone. Getting back to the topic at hand, I do hold a certain degree of envy for this perfect relationship, but I guess there’s no reason to explain it. It’s just one of those natural processes (sounds like Lucas speaking). Anyway, all I can do is maintain a healthy relationship with that class and my own

Second person, is fortunately or unfortunately Louisa. Got to be careful over here as everything I say (or rather write) can and will be used in a kangaroo court of students, all the judges from the art faculty. Actually CH has been telling me all about what Lou has been saying about me. For example, last years while those two were having fun (normal working fun) during their law attachment programme, Louisa remarked, “CH, is Sandra Fong your friend’s (that is me) girl friend?” The moment CH mentioned that to me, I nearly spat out the food I was consuming? Since when to people think I’m attached to others, especially Sandra, who lives in a world of her own? I’m not attached nor have I ever been in my 17 years. Of course, I could have gone to Lou and set the record straight, but I saw no need to. Another thing concerning Louisa is Chih Hung’s belief that I like her. That of course depends on his definition of like. Let’s just say that I always had other things to bother with rather than relationships at this stage of my life.

Third person that cropped up was Debbie. For you to understand this part, you have to refer back to my entry, “Dead poet’s society.” We’ve been having a heated debate on whether it was me or CH who first invited Debbie to join us for lunch that day. From what I can most vividly recall, I was the one who asked her first, immediately after the extra Literature lesson when the rest were all packing up. Another issue cropped up from this incident. “You’re so sad. All of your JC life you’ve only gone out with one girl—Debbie” was what Chih Hung said. Although that may be true, it’s really because every time I go out with him, he’s extremely reluctant to call any one else along, and tells me not to bother to. Maybe it’s because I’m slightly introverted and enjoy days of solitude rather than hours of company. Then again, it is not to say that I dislike girls, I like them, but not to any extreme.

The fourth person here is Lucas. The difference is that CH does have to bring up any thing about him; he’s always around to talk to. Of course, with class changes and others stuff, I rarely see him and sort of miss the times when he strokes the hair on my arm. Check this conversation out:

Me: Ah, Lucas I see you’re growing hair on your hand. Welcome to a new stage of life.

Lucas: Thanks

Both of us (to CH): You’re the only one with no hair on his arm. Aw, poor girl

(Laughter ensued)

CH (to me): You’re quite fat. Can be a Buddha.

Lucas: But Buddha’s ain’t that hairy man

(Second lot of laughter)

That’s the kind of friendship that I like and treasure, not the cold unfriendly welcome you get from some people. Then again, I’m talking about human relationships in general and not about me.

Oh on this point of relationships, Let me recall a certain incident before Lit Paper 8 on wednesday. Whilst I was glancing through my PC notes, laughter erupted in the background. Turning around, I saw Louisa shield her face while CH was waving a pirated CD (Pirates of the Caribbean) in front of her. Of course pre exam anxieties made me dismiss this incident until later when Mr Chan told me that she didn't want to be disturbed by the picture of Orlando Bloom on the CD cover and he was just teasing her. Of course, out of all this cam laughter and evidence of true camraderie, something need in this world.
