New Year's thoughts *

2003-12-31 11:16 p.m.

A few hours before New Year’s Day arrives, I’m sitting in front of the computer stoning. One of my friends is happily clubbing down at CHIJMES, another is enjoying her time with her group at some BBQ, and here I am with no one. Well, I did go out for some family dinner at Esmirada down at Orchard Hotel but that was for less than two hours. Orchard Road, in contrast to the restaurant, is bursting with humanity. Singaporeans really don’t have much of a choice. They either breathe in the exhaust fumes while strolling along the most popular road in the city state or get trampled and squeezed at some beach party down in Sentosa.

How about me? Why am I here while 80% of the population is out of their homes? I could be clubbing (and learning how to get a hangover), or absorbing the atmosphere at any hotel in Singapore, or even dancing the night away? I’m not that introverted and I’m willing to explore new places. Yet, I’ve only been clubbing once and I can hardly keep my legs on the dance floor for more than five minutes. I guess its not the time for me to be in such a mood partying. However, I will enter that arena soon enough. There is still a bit of time.

Ok, it’s 10 minutes to 2300 hrs now. Still quite some time before the New Year commences. 2003 has been filled with chaos, disorder, epidemics (well one major one) but everyone seems to have improved from them. Iraq has some glimmer of hope with Hussein out of power, Afghanistan is picking up fast, and Eastern Europe has seen a rapid entry into a new dimension. The US has shifted its power to new areas of the globe, China finds itself in a vibrant economic arena and even Australia is improving. Al Queda lurks around but is slowed cornered in its activities, ASEAN has rooted out more JI leaders and cells. It other fronts, the picture is mixed some what. Africa still is plagued with millions of AIDS cases, but help is on the way. Germany hates GM food but there’s a certain interest in it. South America has still not changed much form the 1960 and 1970s and is pretty much neglected. India see hope in Kashmir while Musharraf is a lucky soul. In the Asia Pacific, Vietnam could be the next dominant player with the political change in the region.

Let us see science and technology has undergone drastic alterations. I’m not an expert in this area—ask Chan Feng Yi for more—but I must say that SARS has jolted everyone. Let’s pray for an effective vaccine soon. The Concorde is now a relic of the past, and we shall not have the opportunity to experience Supersonic travel—unless you join the Air Force. Obesity has been focused on too, but Americans don’t seem to have changed (No offense intended). Space missions have shifted to new areas after the space shuttle disaster in the early part of the year. The Mars mission has encountered difficulties and the Jupiter probe was sent to its final resting place—quite a pity. Arthur C. Clarke’s vision of a space station by 2001 was never fulfilled and 2010 may not be the year we seen man traveling to planets in our Solar System. Dreams are still dreams for now.

Society has changed, relationships have either become more complex or more difficult to maintain. People see a larger glimmer of hope every year. Can man keep on improving or are we near or at the zenith of our time? The future is not only ours to control, is ours to pass on to the next generation. The earth cannot live forever but can man surpass even his own habitat? Haunting issues for this time—our Alpha and Omega.
