Current Affairs 2004-01-05 10:18 p.m. Ok, so today I managed to go out with another person besides the usual CCH and debaters. No, it wasn't a girl, it was Lucas, and the meeting was just to hand over presents and have a quick lunch. Not the common lunch, for the first time, we headed for proper traditional Chinese food--Xiao long bao, soup and noodles at some place at the basement of Paragon. We went for Crepes and Ice Cream after that and sat down till around six pm (Lucas left earlier) to talk about current affairs. Ok, we did talk about proper current affairs, like the SARS case in China, local politics and world issues like countries economies, then we witched to the other definition of "current affairs"--gossiping about who's doing what, what's up with this girl and so on. Ok, so girls are the one's who gossip but that does not mean that there are no exceptions. Of course, I'm no going to mention all what we chatted about, that would be personal suicide. Let's just say that CH will not deviate from his ambition to get a perfect score for his A Levels, that he won't let me beating him and that he's competing against some people that I know. On my part, I'm still keeping to my ambition that I'll work in the UN and get rich somehow. Hmm what else: Oh yes we tried contacting Luke but somehow, he either does not want to talk to me or he's living in seclusion. (Luke, if you are reading this, did you actually slam the phone down on me?) We had a big laugh over that matter. We sort of concluded that we ought to do something special when we see him on results day. Then, the topic switched to that of Prom Night, which was exactly one month ago. CH asked me to mention who was the best dressed girl in his class that night (hey, this is true so nobody can sue me) so I went into a massive recollection on who wore what. Finally, I gave my answer--you can ask CH what it was. Then, I gave a speech awarding their class the best dressed class award--a nonexistent award that A04 was hoping for. Learnt how CH got a picture of him and Liqing and he pasted it on his desktop. It's not that I wanted a picture of her; it was just that I forgot to get more pictures with other people. As I told him, I don't want the Prom to be like Ishiguro's "Floating World" which disappears with the morning light; I wanted it to remain forever. What else? Debate cropped up--on whether we should go back to train the juniors, but figured out that we just won't have the time. I found out how sad it is to wait for NS and not be able to get a job like the girls who are earning tons of money--well the A04 girls that is. Debbie’s getting paid a huge sum working in some investment house, Lou’s in Starhub and everyone else except the January batch of 18 year old males have found some occupation. The common job to head for is relief teaching at any school—but usually MOE will post you some out of the way school and give you some rowdy class to contend with. Another popular choice is being a waiter/waitress any where, but if you are not the type who can cope with multiple orders, there’s danger in choosing that line of work. In fact, CH and I were joking about finding out where someone (that has a grudge against us) works, go to that restaurant and bug her so much that we would demand to see the manager over “her” poor performance. Back to the subject, the better jobs are those of being clerks, sales assistants and other fields along those lines. There were other issues that came up, some which I’ve always wanted to know and some that has remained the same—like Ch’s protection over girls (those girls he’s close with.) This meeting was one of the first I’ve had since Prom, one of the first since my busy December schedule and it turned out to be slightly different. Not just because of Lucas’ presence, not because of the food we ate, but probably because it was a change, a new change for the New Year.
