My friend's party

2004-06-19 5:44 p.m.

Do note that I didn’t say it’s my BEST friend’s party. It’s technically not HIS party but it’s a party which he is going to. Does that mean anything to me at all? Possibly, because it’s the party of another friend, a sort of farewell cum birthday cum class gathering party. Big deal, you may say, that’s all too common. Well, for one, it is common with classes like 02A04 but not for those who are fragmented just because a small handful detest another one or two individuals.

Ok, my point is very blurred, so let’s make it clearer. People are blessed n many ways, however small they appear to you or others. We don’t always notice these blessings and be thankful for them. Do you remember all those primary and secondary school civic and moral education lessons where they tell you how thankful you should be to be born in this generation and no suffer like your forefathers did? Maybe we should take note of that and apply it to our daily lives. I’m not saying to adhere to it every single moment, but at least acknowledge the gifts you receive in some way. Don’t take the as they are, use them and discard them once they aren’t in your highest piriority. Sometimes these gifts may be friends and just mates in school, and that makes its trickier. Hold on to them, establish closer contact with some, and try to minimize the friction. Especially if you were at a starting point in front of them and they are accelerating faster and faster to catch up. Competition is no doubt an inevitable part of human nature, but it turns ugly based on how you play the game. If you have an air of arrogance and think that others are just sore losers if they fail to achieve what you have got, your playing the game wrong. You may see nothing amiss initially, but when you discover that those comrades put a distance between you and them and outings are with another friend/another group of friends.

So I’m speaking in generalities. Let me continue. You have this class by coincidence, not exactly perfect but better than anything else you would have expected. School has ended and all of you scatter in different directions. You say their in the past hence there’s no desperate need to meet up. Yet you contact them enthusiastically, hoping to see them at some school function. Then circumstances change your mood and you see the old ignorance and impatience coming from them. That’s all just in your mind. They actually don’t give a hoot even if you get that far in life or what. It’s you that wants everything they have, even though it’s small. Wait, their hypocrisy coming. You say they you don’t care about them and laugh at their minor success, yet you readily agree to join them at some gathering. The next moment, you change your mind and say that there are other things worth attending and that they spoil your weekend. Then at the last moment, you decide to go.

So there’s a class party somewhere within a 5 KM radius. How utterly uninteresting. What’s even more dull is that someone is bringing a bottle of wine. What type, may I ask? Or were you just pulling my leg? Wine is so cliché, I’ll probably bring boxes of chocolate, Champagne and more gifts. After all, it’s suppose to be someone’s birthday around the corner, isn’t it? Oh yes, there’s going to be lots of fancy dressing to night. I can’t imagine that far, but who wants to? There’s nothing much to boy’s and girl’s clothing is there? And what about the nocturnal activities? (I mean the things that will happen through out the event.) No doubt cards and talking will be the order of the day. I don’t need to guess who will be in which group.

Well, that’s as much as I perceive that will happen. Tomorrow willl be much better. There’s Church and SG 13. If we’re lucky, soccer will be the order of the day, but not before some deep reflections on life and and our walk with our Lord. Hmm, soccer with girls, albeit three of them. No doubt there will be loads of squealing and teasing on at the ACS (I) field tomorrow. Even thought it may be scorching hot as usual, it’s worth the while. True cohesion and joy lies there.
