Summer, BBQ and thoughts 2007-06-09 9:22 p.m. It’s summertime. One thing I failed to mention earlier is that the Brits are really really amazing. I mean my fellow University Students. Few weeks before an exam, the typical Singaporean (like me) would be cramming facts into his head so much that one could try reciting them while sleeping. The typical British student finds his or herself frolicking on the lawn, sunglasses on or perched on their head listening to their ipods while reading notes causally. Others would be playing games of cricket, Frisbee or football while others could still find the time to be involved in student’s societies and plan for activities after and even during examination periods. I’m not saying that the Brits are stupid or wish to be ultimate risk takers, far from that. They are perhaps a strong example all and all rounded person. On average, a Singaporean would study mainly during his or her examination period and then party wildly afterwards. British students on the other hand, play hard as they work. They’ve learnt how to balance both sides extremely well. Singaporean students are still far away on a different plane. We may have IP, IB advanced routes to Univeristy, Sports Schools etc, etc, but the average Singaporean student is far away form the balance of life in the education world. This is not just limited to just University students. The average British teenager, by the end of their Sixth form/A levels have see more, done more, and traveled more than his Singaporean counterpart. He probably has been on overseas expedition trips, acted in several musicals, represented his/her school in inter school and regional competitions, and probably have done voluntary work. Ok, more on this later. Friday was Tennis Courts “End of Exams BBQ”. It’s as I said, summertime and Barbeques are an essential part of British and Western summer activities. For a pound, we got to load ourselves with either a burger or a hot dog, loads of salads, an array of sausages and two bottles of drinks a piece. There were bouncy-tents, and other short amusement stuff—again reliving the children-side of us. For 50 pence, there were cups of vodka jelly , and all proceeds were promised to be given to a hospice. Everyone was lying on the grass. Maybe I’ll try that next time, though I’m not sure I would like that as a studying position. My recent entries are short and vague. Call it due to the absence of writing entries for close to two months. I’ll plan ahead for later entries. Next up should be stuff on the Summer Ball (which is tomorrow, Sunday), the Vale Festival and my trip to Berlin. Auf Wiedersehen for now.
