Christmas in Birmingham again 2007 * 2007-12-16 3:10 p.m. This is going to be another short entry…. Birmingham is just so Christmasy every November-December period. Forget Singapore gaudy and dazzling lights, the simple decorations around the city centre is just enough to create the perfect mood for Christmas. If you think sales anywhere are sales, beat the pre and post Christmas Sales around the Bull Ring shopping complex. It’s so crowded you finally learn where the back and side entrances. What makes the city even more Christmasy is the annual German Market. I know I’ve written about it before but hey it certainly beats any other city because of this special event. Having a German market in an English City might be unusual, but hey, this is where all different cultures meet. The market is as German as any Deutsche fair can be. From strong traditional German cider and beer, to authentic German snacks and food and various goods, it’s all there. My first stop, as in last year, was the potato pancakes with apple sauce, then I just stood by and took in the smells of chocolates, sweets and marvelled at the hand crafted goods and jewellery. Up at Victoria Square, where the Carols in the City were to take place, it was bustling even more. Queues weren’t even snake like, they were simply all over the place. Favourite stalls includes that which served Pomme Frites mit Curry Wrust and the enormous sausages rolls, or what Americans call Hot Dogs. Janet and the girls have another name for this—Phallic symbol sausages. Urm well yeah. So I had one of those, not without spilling sauce on my jacket sleeve. Oops. So you want to know how cold it can get? It was literally freezing in the Square and yet that didn’t deter anyone from arriving there. In fact, it made good business for the stall which sold sweet warm wine or hot honey wine, which I tried. By the time the actual carols started, it was like living in a meat freezer, or those that keep dead bodies in tact. I think they even cut short the service, like only a songs were sung ant the whole thing ended after and hour or so. Nevertheless, it was simply thrilling.
