End of the beginning * 2009-03-27 7:06 p.m. So another short update: Every term has is highs and lows but its worth recording down this term. I won’t list them by either category but instead listen certain activities/actions: 1) Work wise could be compared to a running race or battlefield. Am thankful for the help that came along and the challenges along the way. Much of the call for work of course drew me away from having some social life but then again it was also about the balance. Oh well, still had time to head for these: 2) UN cultural night. Jointly organized with the Minority Student’s Association. It was wonderful except that I didn’t get to eat as much a variety as I wished to. Still , got to try what was suppose to be Palestinian salad. The flags or most countries were there but even though Malaysia’s flag was there, my own home country’s wasn’t. Sign of the times? Haha. 3) DFID conference on the future of UK aid. I was hoping they would send Douglas Alexander but no, it was Mike Foster, who was chosen I guess because his constituency was so nearby. I really wanted to ask a question especially since his speech was so general. Darn it could form a question. Even so, we had a lively debate at our table on Climate Change even though I wished it was on another topic. Met up with the Jubilee Debt Relief members and a Reverend who lived in my country for more than 20 years. 4) IDD (International Development Department) conference with the guest speaker from the World Bank. The topic was on faith based organizations and how the Bank is monitoring them in comparison to the public sector efforts on health and education. Interesting. Something that should be considered in IPE. 5) Meeting Catherine. I really didn’t plan it and knew that she would be busy during her time in Birmingham. Still it was sheer coincidence that I was returning to get a new blue pen when I met her along the way. If there wasn’t that lecture we could have had coffee/tea. Oh well. Good to hear that she’s well. 6) End of term drinks with my lecturer. This time in a pretty decent pub in Harborne. PhD students are always great to talk to and got a great insight from one of the Liam. If only academic work could always be like this…. My PMQ's Quote for the month of March: "Why does the Leader of the House not step in? When Chamberlain lost his party's confidence, Churchill stepped forward; when Eden crossed the Atlantic, exhausted, Supermac came forward. This could be her moment." William Hague to Harriet Harman. This really got me laughing That’s it folks. Churchill’s quote comes to mind: “Now this is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning."
